The term “identity” has been part of academic, anthropological, sociological, cultural and political discourse for several decades now. It was psychologists like Erikson who first gave the concept of “identity” a place of importance as early as the 1950′s, when he attempted to continue Freud’s work on the “identification” phenomenon and the reasons why individuals were inextricably attached to the notion of identity and were determined on self-identification (Gleason 1983 : 914-5). Since that time numerous other scholars have examined the same question, among them sociologists, anthropologists and political scientists. In their search for the meaning of identity and its roots, these scholars identified several different types of identities, amongst which are primordial identity, optionalist identity and collectivist identity (Gleason, 1983; Cerulo 1997). These scholars, amongst whom Erikson, Goffman, Berger and Durkheim occupy a place of unique importance, maintain that identity is an outcome of social interaction and of communal belonging. Indeed, communal belonging gives rise to the collective identity upon which nationalism and nationhood are founded upon (Gleason, 1983; Cerulo 1997). Within the context of the stated, collective identity emerges as critically important to national unity and, indeed, as a predicator of the ability of nations to survive as a unified whole. It is because of the role which collective identity plays in the survivability of nations that social scientists have worried about young people suffering from “an epidemic of socially produced identity crises” (Cote and Allahar 1996, xvi-xvii). When the youth begin to confront an identity crisis and when they confront an inability to embrace the collective identity particular to their culture and society – a collective identity which is the outcome of the national heritage – the nation becomes fragmented. It is no longer held together by a common identity but is divided between numerous, contesting and conflicting identities. This is, according to several anthropologists and sociologists the problem which Lebanon confronts (Assal and Farrel, 1992).
Lebanon’s identity crisis has been the subject of research studies for close to five decades now. In the 1950′s, young Lebanese were said to suffer from an identity crisis which was due, primarily, to their feeling trapped between “East” and “West.” During the civil war, studies of war youth showed that young people were in a moral crisis and were losing their close family ties (Assal and Farrell 1992). A questionnaire responses of over a thousand college students found, among other things, “a deep sense of angst about their future in Lebanon” (Faour 1998: 152).
Besides the issue of youth, Lebanon itself is said to have been created with an identity problem, and the recent civil war is at least in part explained by a disagreement over Lebanon’s identity. Kamal Salibi, one of Lebanon’s most renowned historians, wrote in 1988 that “in all but name, Lebanon today is a noncountry. Yet, paradoxically, there has not been a time when the Muslims and Christians of Lebanon have exhibited, on the whole, a keener consciousness of common identity…” (Salibi 1988: 2). Lebanese sociologist, Munir Khouri deplores the absence of a shared, national identity among the Lebanese, saying that “the search for such identity remains to be the great current drama of the area” (Khouri 1990: 47). In order to understand the preoccupation with Lebanese identity, it is necessary to take a brief look at Lebanon’s history as a multi-sectarian society.
Lebanon is divided into five geographical areas: the coast with its five major cities, the Lebanon mountains, the fertile Beqa Valley between the Lebanon and Anti-Lebanon mountain ranges, the Akkar in the North, and the until recently occupied South. Dialect variations distinguish Southerners from Northerners and Beqa inhabitants, and while most regions have mixed sectarian populations, there are clear majorities in the different areas. With seventeen recognized religious communities, Lebanon has been described as a mosaic society (Barakat 1988), each group favoring group endogamy, and fostering family and communal ties at the expense of a larger, national identity, which would unite interests of the Lebanese rather than pit them against each other (Khalaf 1987).
When the French took over the mandate of Syria in the aftermath of World War I, they decided to divide their new territory administratively into two parts. They created Lebanon at the coast with Beirut as its capital, and Syria in the region’s interior with the capital in Damascus. At the time, there was a debate as to what parts of the former Ottoman territory should be included in the Lebanon area Some wanted to create a smaller state in the mountains with a majority Christian population, others wanted a state that encompassed the economically important coastal towns. In 1920, it was decided to go with the latter option, called the Grand Liban (Salibi 1993). In order to assuage fears amongst leaders in the Christian community that their voices would remain heard in the political arena even if there was a Muslim majority, the French decided to institute a governing system of cross-sectarian power sharing according to sectarian population percentages. This system had been introduced in the Mount Lebanon area in 1864, a few years after a bloody conflict between Christian and Druze during the time of the Ottoman Empire (Hanf 1990). However, what had worked for a 19th century “Small Lebanon” which consisted of mountain regions with clear denominational majorities, became a never-ending dilemma in the 20th century, after the French High Commissioner decreed the State of Greater Lebanon on August 31, 1920. Inside the French-mandated borders, no single sectarian community had a clear majority, with the two largest, Shiite and Maronite, each at less than 30%. This is when each person started to count as member of his or her sect (Faour 1998).
While this sectarian political system ideally guarantees each religious community representation in parliament, its reliance on fixed ratios of communities has been a problem since independence- The first and last official and highly contested census in Lebanon was conducted in 1932 in the context of the French High Commissioner’s refusal to let a Muslim, Muhammad al-Jisr, run for the position of president, a post reserved for the larger Maronite community (Salibi 1993: 175-76).
Within the context of the stated, identity is not just an anthropological and sociological issue but it is the key divisive issue in Lebanon today. As Thomas Friedman (1989: 46) wrote in From Beirut to Jerusalem:
The Lebanese individual traditionally derived his social identity and psychological support from his primordial affiliations – family, neighborhood, or religious community, but rarely from the nation as a whole. He was always a Druze, a Maronite, or a Muslim before he was a Lebanese; and he was always a member of the Arslan or Jumbolatt Druze clans before he was a Druze or a member of the Gemayel or Franjieh Maronite clans before he was a Maronite. The civil war and the Israeli invasion only reinforced this trend, dividing Lebanese into tighter-knit micro-families, or village or religious communities, but pulling them farther apart as a nation.
As indicated in this quote, the Lebanese identity is practically non-existent because the Lebanese individual identifies him/herself, not only in sectarian and religious terms but in familial ones. Religious and familial identity do not only supersede the national one but have, to a great degree, rendered the national identity inconsequential. As Makdisi (2000) quite persuasively argues, the Lebanese defines the Lebanese nation in terms of his/her own religious, sectarian or primordial identity. Therefore, for the Maronite, Lebanon is a Maronite state and for the Muslim it is a Muslim state. It is, thus, that not only is Lebanon left without a national identity but that its identity is a question of debate and conflict, reaching the level of Civil War.
In the final analysis, and as has been argued in the above paragraphs, Lebanon suffers from an identity crisis. Nationhood has, to a significant degree, become contested and national identity is practically undefined as a direct outcome of the failure of the Lebanese to arrive at a consensus regarding who they are and what their nation is. History, as argued, has played a significant role in Lebanon’s identity crisis, an identity crisis which has been known to erupt into civil war.
